Beginner spoon carving with lee scheffey

Learn to carve a small cooking spoon from a tree! This one-day class at Clark Organic Farm in Carlisle, MA will focus on gaining skills with two main tools of spoon carving – the sloyd (straight) knife and the hook knife. We will explore wood grain, learn different strokes and maintenance with each knife, and learn how to care for your body while carving. Learn the process from start to finish, but work may be in various states of completion when students leave class. You will leave class with your own small cooking spoon, and the empowerment to continue learning and making things out of wood. This is a great class for beginners, as well as folks with some experience carving who are looking to brush up / reengage! All levels welcome. This class is limited to 8 participants, and will run from 10 am - 3 pm. Participants must bring their own lunch and water.
Instructor bio: Lee Scheffey is a spoon carver and green woodworker from New Hampshire with a background in education. They have been carving avidly for eight years, teaching carving for 4, and work exclusively with green wood, using techniques and tools that humans all over the world have used for thousands of years. farm & forest potluck concert ft. tenderbellies!

Join us to round out the summer with music by Tenderbellies — and, oh yeah, a potluck! Tenderbellies belongs to this generation’s string band musicians that are bringing fresh perspectives to acoustic music. They play the good old stuff and have knit their varied influences –- the blues, hints of jazz, and rock –- into the endlessly adaptable bluegrass sound. It’s a seamless and surprising “bluegrassy” tide of music full of wicked pickin’ – energy, feeling, and attitude that keeps leaning in to hear it all.
We love that this band has a deep appreciation for home. They’ve made their name and reputation in and around Burlington, Vermont, their home turf. And they’ve been rewarded with “Seven Daisies” Award for Best Bluegrass Group in Vermont seven times in a row. That tells me they love the folks at home and are beloved by them. Far from stay-at-homes, they’ve toured on the west coast and opened for national touring acts whose names you probably know.
